About The Redoubt

Origins

The publication was launched in November 2025. Its name reflects the times in which we live: when honor, decency and the very possibility of a better life are under assault from the grotesque forces of reaction.

The Redoubt acknowledges that there have been losses but refuses to accept these as defeats. It aspires to be a stronghold for those who respect honesty and kindness, not power and wealth; to be a gathering place for all who refuse to abandon their convictions and submit to the high-water barbarity of this moment. Our opponents are the bullies of the world.

The view from anywhere

The founder, Charles R. Davis, is an American journalist who has written for publications such as The Guardian, The Daily Beast, The New Republic and Columbia Journalism Review.

Currently based in Austria, he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, attended college in San Diego, California, and began his career as a congressional correspondent for public radio in Washington, DC. He has lived in Nicaragua and Ecuador, worked as a producer in Los Angeles and reported from countries such as Venezuela, Romania, Moldova and Turkey.

While the publication will often focus on news involving the United States, The Redoubt embraces internationalism as a working principle, welcoming and hoping to serve readers from all over the world.

Our mission

We will always tell the truth. Through original reporting and analysis, we will stand up for the interests of the many and challenge ignorance and oppression in all their guises. We reject dogma, abhor nihilism and refuse to concede that this is the best we can do. We believe that we can make this world better, despite the odds, and that we have a responsibility to try.

The best things in life

We do not believe in paywalls. The Redoubt is a fortress, not a silo. But producing the work published here does come at a cost.

If you are moved by a piece, please consider a one-time donation. Visitors with the means to do so are also encouraged to subscribe to our paid newsletter offering, which offers a weekly roundup of the best in reporting and commentary from around the world, as well as the opportunity to directly pose questions and request areas of coverage from The Redoubt.

Everyone is encouraged to share what they read.
