'Critical Support' in trying times

The Redoubt is expanding its operations and opening another front in the fight for hearts and minds.

In a new show, "Critical Support: Charles x Shirin," The Redoubt's Charles R. Davis and Shirin Sadeghi, an historian and former BBC journalist, provide informed analysis of global developments in politics, culture and society. As the name suggests, the perspective is indeed critical — the hosts have preferences, but they will not act as partisans — but the intent is also to provide a supportive dose of real news and genuine hope in a world that is presently lacking in both.

The show is available on Apple and Spotify.

In the first few episodes, Charles and Shirin discuss topics such as the toppling of Viktor Orbán and what it means for democracy in Hungary and elsewhere; the logic of "lesser evils" and whether purity tests are responsible for Donald Trump; and whether "One Battle After Another" was inspiring — and deserved an Academy Award — or whether it was actually problematic.
