A professor of geography and environment at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, Reece Jones has authored a series of books concerning immigration, violence and the history of both at the U.S. border.

His latest work, released Oct. 20, is "Smuggler: Drugs, Gangs, and Refugees at America's Northern Border." Published by Simon & Schuster, the book tells the story of Bob Boulé, a self-described conservative Republican who opens a bed-and-breakfast a stone's throw from the U.S.-Canada border.

Boulé dubs his property the "Smuggler's Inn," turning it into a shrine of sorts for the infamous smugglers of yore. Before long, though, Boulé finds his politics — and his respect for U.S. Border Patrol — challenged by his encounters with asylum seekers, who use his property and the cover of night to cross into Canada.
