This year, Vienna hosted the 70th edition of Eurovision, which was perhaps the most controversial one yet. 

While ostensibly just a showcase for campy pop songs, the the fun does not happen in a vacuum, a fact that organizers recognized in 2022 when they ejected Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Why then, critics ask, has Israel not likewise been kicked out over its genocide in Gaza and invasion of Lebanon?

The Redoubt spoke to activists and fans alike, exploring whether politics should have any place in a song contest — and whether it's even possible to avoid.
